India Visa Exempt Countries

To Visit India, you must have a visa. You can apply for your visa apply from Indian Diplomatic Mission or can directly apply for Indian visa here for your Indian e-Visa. Visa rules for visitors vary from one County to another. It is advised that tourists willing to visit India must confirm whether they need a pre-arranged visa, visa on-arrival or they belong to visa exempt country.

India provides Visa-free entry to the citizens of :

  • Bhutan
  • Maldives (Up to 90 days stay)
  • Nepal

Note: Citizens of these nations are offered visa-free entry to India, if they do not arrive from China. Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan may live or work freely in India without any limit of stay.

India provides Visa on arrival ONLY to the citizens of Japan. The validity of this visa is up to 30 days.The visa is issued provided they are not of Bangladeshi or Pakistani origin.


Visa exemption for Persons of Indian Origin Card.

A PIO (Person of Indian Origin) Card allows visa free travel and gives several benefits to the card holder. The Government of India has a comprehensive Scheme for Persons of Indian Origin - called the "PIO Card Scheme". Under this scheme, Persons of Indian Origin up to the fourth generation (great grandparents) settled throughout the world would be eligible, unless they are not citizens of the following nations-

  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • China
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka


Eligibility for PIO Card

A foreign citizen (not of the origin of Bangladesh, Pakistan or other countries, as specified by the Central Government from time to time) can be eligible for PIO Card if:

  • The candidate at any time held an Indian passport.
  • The candidate or either of his/her parents or grandparents or great grandparents were born in and was a permanent resident in India as defined in the Government of India Act, 1935 and other territories that became part of India provided none of them at any time were citizens of any of the countries mentioned above.
  • The candidate is a spouse of a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin covered under (i) or (ii) above.
